Backing Up Your Cydia Packages

Feb 12, 2011 by

Editor’s Note: This is my second time doing this in a week.

Oh my gosh! Did you hear? Greenpois0n was updated for the latest firmware! Let’s jailbreak!

Nah, I have too many apps and themes I don’t want to lose.

Well you can back up your apps from iTunes!

What about my Cydia tweaks and themes?

We’ve all gone through it. The endless cycle of losing your packages because Apple doesn’t like you messing around with their filesystem. This problem can be easily solved though, and here’s how…

  1. All the package backup apps don’t work or are paid, so we’re going to do this manually.
  2. Make sure you have OpenSSH and Gawk installed on your iPhone and download PuTTY on your PC.
  3. SSH into your iPhone using PuTTY. If you don’t know how, Google it.
  4. Login as root and enter the following command:
  5. dpkg -l | grep ^ii | awk '{print $2}' > /var/root/cydiainstall.txt

  6. Remove all lines starting with gsc. Use an FTP client like WinSCP to save the file onto your computer.
  7. Restore or update.
  8. Jailbreak.
  9. Install OpenSSH, Gawk and APT 0.7 Strict.
  10. Use PuTTY and login as root.
  11. Enter the following command:
  12. apt-get install `cat /var/root/cydiainstall.txt`

  13. It will then ask you if you are sure. Press Y.
  14. In no time, you’ll have all your apps back!

Coincidentally, I’m doing this right now.
