iPhone hacker iH8sn0w has released an update to Sn0wbreeze, a Windows custom IPSW software, which enables support for untethered iOS 5 jailbreaks for older bootrom iPhone 3GSes.

This takes advantage of an old exploit present in older bootrom iPhone 3GSes that allows for untethered jailbreaks for life.

Other than this update, all other aspects of the jailbreak tool remain the same and all other devices vulnerable to the Limera1n exploit can still be jailbroken tethered.

Those who do jailbreak though, keep in mind that many jailbreak tweaks and themes are incompatible with this new OS and may not work as intended. Use with caution.
